This biannual, virtual Symposium aims to foster discussion about the suppression and erasure of local and independent textile and clothing production systems (whether fashion-related or not) that operate outside the mainstream fashion system. In other words, it seeks to value decentralized and decolonial ways of creating and sharing knowledge about fashion, promoting diversity. It also aims to highlight the racism, violence, and discrimination inherent in textile and fashion production worldwide.
Resisting, questioning, confronting, exploring, expanding, and transforming are expected actions that characterize this Symposium from a local and multidisciplinary perspective. It aims to reclaim ancestral worldviews, revalue indigenous philosophies, make visible and revalue local non-fashion designers/systems, and find the appropriate way to amplify this knowledge and give a voice in academic and outreach spaces.

Work towards a politics of reparation, a politics of restitution and aesthetic and epistemic repair, a politics of transition from a logic of representation and possession that is key in contemporary fashion to a logic of reception and duty, and a politics of restoring a place in the present, of welcoming and situating what has been denied and erased. To critique the denial and erasure of a diversity of fashion systems due to Eurocentric modernity/coloniality, redefining fashion as a multitude of possibilities rather than a conceptual framework that falsely claims universality.

To expose and critique the obscured intersectionality of discrimination, erasure, and violence within the dominant contemporary fashion system. To activate a transformative movement toward a flourishing global fashion landscape characterized by values, spirituality, respect, and justice for nature, as well as ethical, social, and cultural justness. To disrupt discriminatory and exclusionary power dynamics in contemporary fashion history, curricula, museum collections, and the industry. To contribute to the field of fashion studies with decolonial and decentralized experiences, practices, and knowledge that are collaborative and ethical.
